DISCOVERING INDUCTIVE BIBLE STUDY
This unit majors on the definition of the inductive method and the tools needed to use it. The primary exercise is an "observations worksheet" about Psalm 1, which is used to practice finding the various "parts" of a passage.TOPICAL AND CHARACTER BIBLE STUDY
Here we take both a topic (bread) and a character (John the Apostle) to practice gathering Scriptures together for the purpose of composing a true picture of the topic or the person. The steps of inductive study are briefly reviewed along with a short overview about the Bible.CUTTING IT STRAIGHT
In this study, individuals learn to appreciate how easy it is to fall into misinformation (error) apart from very careful handling of Scripture. Most of the exercises lead toward understanding this concept. We also cover basic biblical history and the history of our common language translations of the Bible.DISCOVERING GOD IN SCRIPTURE
In this class, we move to the highest reason for learning to know God's Word: To more intimately know the God of the Bible. We launch into the examination of passages that give us insights on the person of God and Christ. Each of these four studies offers the following:
- Bible background info
- Inductive study info
- In-class exercises to practice putting tools in focus to use
- A break-away group assignment (men and women separate into study groups) where they observe a passage or accumulate information from various passages and make observations and applications. The group then comes back together and talks about what was discovered.
- Either in the appendix or in the text are:
- A list of good books to learn more about how to study the Bible
- Resources, including online resources, to help with study
- A Bible "bookshelf" to aid those who are not intimately acquainted with the books of the Bible
- Other resource information applicable to that unit of study
- A take-home assignment called "Digging Deeper" for additional practice with what has been covered in class
