Dr. Otto Makes House Calls

A mission trip report by Angel Ortiz

There was much to do and not enough resources. But God had a purpose. We could not do it all, but we could do something. We could not heal everybody, but we could help some.

Pastor Angel Ortiz

The engine was still running when we heard her voice. “Dr. Otto, my grandmother is very sick at home. She cannot walk. Can you come to my house and see her?” The young lady was not more than 15 and she looked genuinely concerned about her grandmother. We had just arrived at the village called Tierra Colorada, up in the mountains of Guatemala. We walked down a hill to a small hut made out of adobe. No windows, no electricity and a dirt floor. It was hot inside. She looked very sick; both of her feet were infected.

It did not take long to understand why the Lord brought us to the mountains of Guatemala. The need for physical as well as spiritual healing was everywhere. At first we felt overwhelmed by the situation. There was much to do and not enough resources. But God had a purpose. We could not do it all, but we could do something.

Dr.
Nearly 500 people received medical treatment from Dr. Otto and the mission team.
We could not heal everybody, but we could help some. Brother Otto understands. He has been serving for more than 25 years. No complaints from Dr. Otto. He rejoices knowing that the Lord manifests Himself through the physical healing and the preaching of HIS Gospel.

It was a long day. By the time 5 p.m. arrived more than 250 received medicines and vitamins from the team of four Tennesseans lost in a new land and one humble, dedicated trained doctor who preached about Jesus and His love for man. Although a little bit tired, it was time to show two movies, one for children and one for adults. Brother Otto delivered a short message about the love of God through Jesus. More than 10 people accepted Jesus as their personal savior. The day ended about 11 p.m. It was time to get some sleep on the floor inside our comfortable sleeping bags.

Sharing
Dr. Otto shares the Gospel with individuals waiting to receive medical assistance. More than 25 people accepted Christ during the week long trip.
The same can be said about the next two days. We spent a day in a village called Las Escobas, where more people accepted Jesus into their lives. More than 120 children sat in a small room and watched David and Goliath with a sincere interest on the outcome of the battle. The day we spent at the village called Florida was one full with blessing after blessing. By the end of the third day almost 500 people had received medical attention from the doctor who makes house calls and more than 25 had accepted Jesus as their personal Savior. Our bodies were physically tired, but our spirits were strong in the Lord. Somehow He multiplied the medicine and protected us from illness. His message was proclaimed one more time among the poorest of the poor – the forgotten people of Guatemala. Praise the name of the Lord!
