‘Engage’ is meant to give people hope

Things are difficult these days. From rising fuel costs to employment uncertainty, people are feeling life’s pressures. The First Family, First Baptist Church Columbia, is planning Engage — several free events throughout Maury County this Sunday, June 1, from 3-6 p.m., to share a bit of hope and encouragement.

“These events are planned as a way to provide a little bright spot for people,” says Pete Tackett, First Family’s senior pastor. “In these uncertain times, we would like to let people know that God loves them and has a plan for them.”

In addition to providing lunch for fire departments and police stations and gift bags for assisted living centers, First Family members will hand out free water and snacks at Wal-Mart, provide a car wash at Neely’s Mill Piggly Wiggly, host children’s activities at Fairview and Maury County Park, and sponsor a blood drive at First Baptist Church.

“Last year we hosted a Red Cross blood drive at our church,” says Gary Townsend, Pastor of Church and Community Ministries at the First Family. “We were told by the blood drive organizers that they usually collect 30 units of blood per event. Last year our church collected 150 units. Our goal is to have another successful blood drive this year.”

First Baptist Church, located at 2790 Pulaski Hwy., is committed to meeting the needs of people in Columbia and around the world through small group Bible studies, engaging worship services, and hands-on service projects.
